The makeup artists at Milan Fashion Week brought us purple smoky eyes, elaborate feline flicks and, at Prada, some frankly impractical lashes. In Paris—and specifically at Isabel Marant’s spring 2023 show, the mood could not have been more different. Models practically skipped down the runway—“Don’t look like robotic models that are not alive!” the designer told her cast backstage ahead of the show – with sparkling eyes, super-clean hair, and faces that looked freshly scrubbed.
Gigi Hadid—wearing a bleached-out camo-print jacket/dress, strappy heels, and just a hint of a smile—encapsulated the stripped-back mood. The super’s makeup was limited to a barely-there base (find your own perfect light-coverage foundation here), and a slick of lip balm. There was barely a trace of mascara, just full, brushed-up brows to frame the eyes.
Adding to the fresh, girl-next-door appeal? The hair. As with the makeup, styling was kept to a minimum, with models’s hair rough dried and left loose, with lots of natural texture. Gigi’s bright blonde mane, worn loose in a center parting and gently tousled, reflected the just-rolled-out-of-bed effect.
Gigi’s younger sister Bella joined her on the runway, looking similarly fresh-faced and natural, with just a gentle sheen on the lips and the barest hint of blush. The effortless beauty gave the impression of models who had arrived at the venue and walked straight onto the runway, bypassing the makeup chair altogether. And what could be more French than that?
