New Delhi: Ancient Indian workout form yoga has gained a lot of popularity globally owing to its benefits for physical and mental health. From celebrities to the common folk, from children to older adults, this versatile workout is considered effective for everyone. And now, people wish to know whether or not it is wise to do yoga on an empty stomach. To answer this popular query, celebrity yoga trainer Anshuka Parwani – famed for catering to Bollywood actresses like Alia Bhatt, Ananya Panday and Kareena Kapoor Khan – took to Instagram to share a video offering clarity on the subject with nutritionist Pooja Makhija by her side.

Through a detailed caption, the expert answered this popular query.

“Yoga on an empty stomach or a full stomach or just after a little something? While I recommend practising yoga first thing in the morning on an empty stomach so you make the best of your breath work and practice @poojamakhija doesn’t , and none of these beliefs are set in stone. Some things work for some people while they don’t for others. What we must understand is every body is different and therefore reacts very differently. What it really comes down to is you understanding your body and what it likes and what it doesn’t. It’s about really tuning in and understanding what your body is trying to tell you. It’s so important to be able to listen when your body is signalling whether good or bad. No one will understand you or your body the way you do so make sure you listen to it, protect it, do good things for it and celebrate it,” Anshuka Parwani wrote.

The expert duo shared conflicting opinions on the subject – while Parwani was an advocate of practising yoga on an empty stomach first thing in the morning to make the best of breath work, Makhija believed that eating something before a workout is important to kick start metabolism. Be it half of a fruit or something very light, she explained that it is important to fuel the body before starting the day and then go on to fuel the exercise with yoga.

The final verdict

Despite conflicting views on the subject, the experts concluded that one knows own body better than anyone else. Therefore, it is important to see what the body is trying to say – what it needs – and act accordingly.
